glenburtnik.com :: View topic – A rant from me

Thanks for the advice. I am feeling better now, it just made me mad when they said it.

As far as reasons why they kept dumping me, they just didn’t practice, and would cram the night before a performance. 신용카드현금화

That and another MAJOR problem was the creative differences, they’re more of a punk/pop kinda thing. I guess they just don’t want me there trying to make them do STYX, Beatles, and Bon Jovi covers (and I was hoping to get them to do KYAGB) so for that major reason I decided it wouldn’t be worth it.

As for my own band, I’ve been looking into it, but other musicians are few and far between. I’m just hoping to get something together soon, so that we’ve got a shot at it next year. It won’t be easy, but I’m hoping to find some really good people to work with soon.

So for now, I’ll just keep playing and writing, hopefully before the year’s out, I’ll have a few clips (although they won’t be of the best quality) to share with you guys.

Thanks again.

Hi Glen,

My name is Connor and I am 9 years old. I’ve been listening to your music for two years and you are great. I have been taking piano lessons and I hope I will be a great musician like you. Are you happier now since you have been home with your family instead of jamming with Styx? You used to sing my favorite song with them and I was hoping I would see you play with them.
Do you think you will ever play with them again? You only play near your home and I am in California, so do you think you will play near here so I can see you?
I think you rock, and I hope to see you sometime. 신용카드현금화

From,
Connor

—————–

Hi Connor,

I am honored to know I’ve been on your personal play list for almost a quarter of your life. It’s nice to hear I was responsible for a favorite song of yours and I’m glad you think I’m “great”, thanks.

Am I happier now since I have been home with my family instead of jamming with Styx? You bet. I had very little say in my life when I was in the Styx “army”, and no one else felt the same way I did about the amount of time I felt necessary to spend with your own kids. It made me go a little nuts, so I needed to quit and take over my own, less popular life. Do I think I will ever play with them again? Not as long as I have so little perceived value with their business.

I’ll do my best to make it to California, although by the time I get there you may be into other things

Good luck with your piano lessons and with not-so-much effort you will be able to be a much greater musician than I!

Glen,

I’ve been a fan since I first heard a tape containing “Mr. Blue Eyed Soul”, “Lovers For the Hell Of It”, “Here Comes Sally Now, and “Waiting in the Rain”. Do you keep in touch with Bob Miller? (By the way, we used Palookaville as a reference CD while recording my songs. The engineer loved the drums and production). 신용카드현금화

Best, Hal

———————–

Wow, Hal, you go WAAAAY back (late 70s/early 80s).

Bob Miller is still a good friend, though he’s now Robert. He composes for, among other things, films lately and has a great site: www.rmimusic.com – check it out (there’s a rare Burtnik/Miller song there if you look hard enough…)

Miller is one of the more talented people I’ve known. Thanks for mentioning song titles I hadn’t heard in years (“Waiting In The Rain” “Mr Blue Eyed Soul”)

Glen

PS I’m honored to hear someone used “Palookaville” as studio reference!

Hello Glen,
I’m an 18-year-old Styx fan, have all your solo albums, and met you in South Bend, Indiana last year. I just got your new album and I really like the varied song styles. In response to the question you posed about “Roses,” yes it does sound ’80s, but that’s what makes it cool! 신용카드현금화
My mom and I got a real kick out of watching the videos; the one for “BAM!” with the Bob Dylan-esque cue cards was funny. (Has anyone else realized that the cue card thing came from Bob?) I wanted to know if the girl in the “Another” video is Darla? It looked to me like the same girl from the CD Rom pix. The woman in the “Roses” video isn’t Rosie, is it? By the way, Sally did a pretty good job with the “Cry” video too. My fave video was “Kiss Your Ass Goodbye” with you playing all the parts; hilarious!
You did a great job on Welcome to Hollywood. Let’s hope it’s not another eight years before you do your next solo album!

Andrea from Indiana 신용카드현금화

Hello again,
I just emailed you, but being first and foremost a STYX freak I now have a Styx question. On your discography it lists you as playing on ‘Brave New World,’ but I have no idea what or where? You’re not in the album credits at all (except the “special thanks” list). Could you give me an explanation about what went on here?

Thanks,
Andrea in Indiana

—————

Dear Andrea in Indiana (it rolls off the tongue, ya know?), 신용카드현금화

You’re the first person who has picked up on, or at least MENTIONED the Bob Dylan reference of the “BAM!” Video. Initially, my concept was to try to recreate Dylan’s “Subterannean Homesick Blues” promotional film – one of the very first music videos. The concept & style has been quoted often since (including an INXS video I saw once on MTV). Anyhow, I began with the idea of trying to make my own Bob Dylan video, but once Beau got involved, it began going a bit further.

Another little known detail, kind of a secret I guess, is that I played bass on one song and sang background (or izzit backround?) vocals on another on the “Brave New World” disc. To protect the innocent, I suppose I should resist the urge to spit out which songs, but I will tell you the one I played bass on is one of the wackier tracks, and of the one I sang backup on, Tommy Shaw has said he thinks my voice sticks out audibly in the “gang” vocal chorus. Both tracks are Tommy’s tunes, by the way. 신용카드현금화

Andrea, you’re really quite a student of these kind of details, aren’t you? You’re very inquisitive and perceptive and you take mental notes. Very cool.

Keep up the sharp mental attention to quasi-useless trivia, girl!

Dear Mr. Burtnik
Hello, Im 13 years old and im a huge fan of yours and STYX. It was sad for me to hear that you made a big desition to leave STYX, But then again i understand you reasoning for it. You have a family and you have a great reason.
As I was saying I love your music and think it is really inperational. 신용카드현금화
It makes me want to be a singer, but I don’t think I could handle the attention.
I really love your so “SOMETIMES LOVE JUST AINT ENOUGH”!! It is a beautiful song. How did you get the idea to write it?
Who mostly inpirered you to become a singer song writer? I heard or read that you Have 3 children. your family is a lot like mine: You are the same age as my dad your son is 23? I think your daughter is 13 or 12 right? and i cant really remeber the other ones age. What is your Favorite song of all time? mine is SOMETIMES LOVE JUST AINT ENOUGH.Thank you for taking your time to read this!!

Your fan,
~Ashley Anderson~

—————————

Thanks so much, Ashley. I’m glad you like “Sometimes Love Just Aint Enough” and I’ll be sure to mention that to Patty Smyth, who I wrote that song with. 신용카드현금화
It’s hard for me to pick an all-time favorite song. I used to say it was “Getting Better” by the Beatles, but that’s not really accurate anymore. It sort of changes from day to day. It can range from something very loud and heavey (“Epic” by Faith No More) to something very sweet (“Somewhere Over The Rainbow”) to something playful & fun (“Aint No Fun To Me” by Graham Central Station) to something serious (“A Remark You Made” by Weather Report) to something Pop (“Natural Woman” by Aretha Franklin) to something down right goofy (“Love Is All Around”-The Mary Tyler Moore theme). This past weekend, for instance, I played an old song called “(Last Night) I Didn’t Get To Sleep At All” by the Fifth Dimension (ask your Dad) over and over – which shows how corney I can get!

Anyhow, thank you for your lovely letter. Please take care, stay a good girl, and always listen to your Dad!

Carol,

Thanks. Personally, I feel some of my Sunday radio shows are better than others (105.7 THE HAWK, Asbury Park), but yeah, I felt the cowbell episode was one of the better ones. Being a radio personality is new to me and I hope I’m improving (sometimes I’m not so sure).

The “School Of Rock” is actually a tricky show to put together, in that the station asks I play primarily what is on their “Classic Rock” playlist. That’s a puzzle.

Working within limitations is often a good excercise, and I felt pretty good about the cowbell bit. Other faves of mine include the “John Lennon’s Favorite Chord Progression” and, of couse, “Louie Louie”.

Thanks for listening.

It’s especially nice to hear from people who’ve heard my weekly radio show. I’m having a blast doing it and I’m grateful to hear people like you are enjoying it. Seoul Massage

We’re still working out some of the kinks, and I’m not the greatest “on-air-personality”, but I felt good about the cowbell episode myself.

By now you know it’s true I no longer play for Styx. You also might know by now that “Yes I Can” was written by Tommy Shaw and Jack Blades. I still sing and I’m fine, thanks.

GLEN BURTNIK WELCOME TO HOLLYWOOD

My new album Welcome To Hollywoodis kick ass. The songs are perhaps the strongest Ive ever written, and the production is about as big a sound as Ive ever heard come out of two speakers (Glen Burtnik)

There are over a dozen of songs on the album, mostly snapshots of life in the cult of American celebrity, and a postcard from Glens five years of touring the United States performing rock shows. The album ranges from gigantic arrangements to the barest of productions, and the dynamics of the material is inarguable. From a whisper to a scream Welcome To Hollywood is densely packed with music and a number of extras.

The album will be released throughout Europe on June 2 (in the U.K.on June 28), the first edition will contain a bonus DVD and the album has loads of extra tracks and info all packed in a nice slipcase!

mar 1: looks like the gig machine is kicking into high gear – the new glen burtnik band will be performing at harrys roadhouse in historic asbury park on friday, march 12th. this will be a full band show, and if you show up, it’s pretty much guaranteed that you’ll hear a great many of the songs from glen’s upcoming cd ‘welcome to hollywood’!

feb 24: there are those who didn’t get the last ‘welcome to hollywood‘ update, due to some horrendous and otherwise unavoidable mailing list problems, so for those who didn’t get it, here it is in online form.

those who were at the ‘straight from the heart’ benefit last week witnessed the debut of the new glen burtnik band. without further ado, let’s officially introduce them:

on guitars and vocals: glen burtnik hisself

on bass guitar and vocals: beau burtnick (who, as glen says, “spells his last name differently than mine”). son of glen, and very important member of the jersey band ‘dibs.’

on keyboards and vocals: tom brislin. having played with palookaville-era glen, as well as with meat loaf, yes, and throughout most of the 90s and 00s with the extremely popular pop/rock/jazz/art-rock/indie band ‘spiraling,’ tom is an infinitely talented musician and songwriter, who just happens to have a great singing voice.

on drums and percussion: paul wells. a native of pittsburgh, pa, he is a very accomplished and talented drummer who has also been around the block a time or two, having played behind legendary jazz great joe williams on tour, and more recently has been performing in ‘spiraling’ with brislin and company.

a very talented bunch, no doubt. many live dates coming soon – stay tuned! you don’t want to miss out…

feb 11: ok, so maybe the very last ‘welcome to hollywood‘ making-of update will be going out wednesday or thursday instead. unforeseen circumstances and all. i hate it when that happens.

feb 7: the very last ‘welcome to hollywood‘ making-of update will be going out to the mailing list this tuesday.

and don’t forget the ‘straight from the heart‘ benefit concert on saturday feb 14 – it will be the debut of the new glen burtnik band, as well as an all-around great show for a great cause. tickets are still available at ticketweb.com.

jan 23: the ‘writers in the raw’ show at harry’s roadhouse went spectacularly – thanks to everyone who came out! lucky attendees got to hear several of glen’s tunes stripped down to just an acoustic guitar and a voice, including the stunning ‘all thats yet to come’ from his upcoming cd welcome to hollywood. plenty of reviews on the burtnikville bulletin board – check em out!

on saturday, feb 14th (valentine’s day), the new glen burtnik band will be opening for southside johnny and the jukes at the ‘straight from the heart’ benefit concert, with proceeds from the show going to the special olympics of new jersey, the kathe b stapleton memorial scholarship, and the brookdale 9-11 relief fund. also appearing are the original e-street band drummer vini ‘mad dog’ lopez and steel mill retro. the show will be at the brookdale new jersey community college campus robert collins arena. for ticket info, see ticketweb.com or call 732-224-2639. thanks to mike for filling in the blanks!
